American Truck Fuel Economy in Australia: What's Realistic and How to Improve It

Full-size American trucks typically return 13-18L/100km unladen and 20-28L/100km while towing in Australian conditions, depending on model, gearing, tyres and load. Aftermarket lifts, oversized tyres and poor tune quality all increase consumption meaningfully, while correct tyre pressure, servicing and driving style are the biggest levers you control.

Why American truck fuel figures never quite match what you expected

Whether it's a RAM 1500, RAM 2500, Chevrolet Silverado or Ford F-250, most owners find real-world fuel consumption sits noticeably higher than the numbers they saw before buying. Part of that is normal — these are heavy, tall, aerodynamically blunt vehicles built primarily for towing and load-carrying, not fuel efficiency. Part of it, though, comes down to Australian conditions and modifications that most owners don't factor in.

Remanufactured or converted trucks sold here are also frequently fitted with larger tyres, suspension lifts and sometimes aftermarket exhaust or tuning as part of the RHD conversion or before delivery. Each of those changes consumption, sometimes significantly.

These figures are broad guides based on typical real-world driving rather than lab-tested claims, and individual results vary with load, terrain, tyre choice and driving style. A truck doing mostly highway kilometres unladen will sit toward the lower end; one doing hilly stop-start suburban driving with a loaded tray will sit well above it.

What actually affects fuel consumption

Tyre size and pressure

Oversized aftermarket tyres — a common fitment on lifted American trucks — increase rolling resistance and rotating mass, both of which hurt fuel economy. Under-inflated tyres do the same even at standard size. Running the correct pressure for load (not just the sidewall maximum) is one of the simplest, most overlooked fuel-saving checks.

Suspension lifts and ride height

A lift kit increases frontal area and disrupts the factory aerodynamic tune of the vehicle, which shows up most at highway speed. It's rarely dramatic on its own, but combined with larger tyres and a heavier bull bar or canopy, the cumulative effect on fuel use is noticeable — often in the order of 10-15% worse consumption versus a stock-height, stock-tyre truck.

Towing weight and aerodynamics

Towing is the single biggest factor. A tall caravan creates significant aerodynamic drag on top of the added rolling weight, and fuel consumption while towing can be 40-60% higher than unladen driving. Driving style and gearing

Aggressive throttle use, unnecessary idling and towing in the wrong gear all increase consumption. Modern American trucks with 8 or 10-speed automatics are generally well suited to smooth, steady-throttle driving; forcing early upshifts or ignoring tow/haul mode tends to work against the transmission's programming rather than with it.

Fuel quality and injector or DPF condition

On diesel trucks, a blocked DPF, worn injectors or a failing EGR system can all quietly increase fuel consumption well before they trigger a warning light. If your fuel use has crept up gradually without any change in driving, it's worth having the fuel and emissions systems checked rather than assuming it's just the truck getting older.
