The 6.7-litre Cummins fitted to RAM 2500 and 3500 trucks has a strong reputation as one of the more durable heavy-duty diesel engines on the market, and that generally holds true in the trucks we see on the Sunshine Coast. It's not fault-free, though, and a handful of issues come up often enough in our workshop that it's worth knowing about them before they turn into a bigger repair.

Most of the problems below aren't unique to Australian-delivered trucks, but our conditions — long tow hauls, hot climates, and a mix of short suburban trips and long highway runs — do influence which faults show up and how quickly.

The most common 6.7L Cummins problems

1. EGR cooler leaks

The EGR cooler is a frequent failure point. When it leaks, coolant can enter the intake or exhaust system, and the extra soot loading accelerates DPF blockages. Symptoms include coolant loss with no visible external leak, white exhaust smoke, and a DPF that blocks far more often than it should.

2. DPF and regeneration issues

Like every current diesel ute sold in Australia, the 6.7L Cummins relies on a diesel particulate filter to meet emissions standards. Short-trip and stop-start driving prevents the filter from reaching regeneration temperature, leading to blockages, reduced power and eventually limp mode. 3. Lift pump and fuel system wear

The factory lift pump on earlier 6.7L Cummins models is a known weak point. A failing lift pump starves the high-pressure pump and injectors of fuel, and in worst cases can send debris through the fuel system, damaging injectors that are expensive to replace. Symptoms include hard starting, hesitation under load, and a noticeable loss of power when towing.

4. Turbo actuator and variable-geometry turbo faults

The variable-geometry turbocharger relies on an electronic actuator to adjust vane position. When the actuator sticks or fails, you'll typically see reduced boost, a check engine light, or unusual whistling and rattling noises under acceleration.

5. Exhaust manifold cracking

Repeated heat cycling from towing and regen cycles can crack the exhaust manifold over time, producing a distinctive ticking or knocking noise that's often mistaken for a lifter or injector issue. It's a well-known enough fault that it's usually one of the first things we check when a customer reports a new engine noise.

6. Water pump and cooling system wear

The water pump on the 6.7L Cummins can wear out earlier than expected, particularly on trucks used for regular towing where cooling systems work harder for longer. Coolant loss, an overheating warning, or a whining noise from the front of the engine are the usual first signs.

How often should a 6.7L Cummins be serviced?

None of these faults mean the 6.7L Cummins is a bad engine — they're the known wear points on a heavy-duty diesel doing real work. Catching them early is almost always cheaper than waiting for a breakdown.
