Ford F-250 & F-350 in Australia: Owner's and Buyer's Guide

An F-250 or F-350 minor service at American Truck Centre is a fixed $599, covering premium Penrite oil to full capacity, an OEM filter, a full safety inspection and a scan-tool health check. Service every 12,000 km or 12 months, treat towing as severe duty, and on the 6.7 Power Stroke pay particular attention to the emissions system, fuel system and turbo condition.

What does it cost to service an F-250 or F-350 in Australia?

Our fixed minor service price for Ford Super Duty trucks is $599 — the same as other heavy-duty American pickups, and reflecting the oil volume and filtration these engines need rather than a different labour rate. Everything beyond a minor service is quoted individually after inspection, so you're never paying a bundled price for work the truck isn't due for.

6.7 Power Stroke: what actually goes wrong

  • CP4 fuel pump failure on earlier trucks — catastrophic when it happens, so fuel system condition is worth inspecting at every service
  • EGR cooler and DPF restriction on trucks that only do short suburban trips and never complete a regeneration
  • Turbo VGT sticking from soot build-up, showing as lag or a limp-mode event under load
  • Coolant system and degas bottle issues on high-hour trucks that tow in Queensland heat
  • Glow plug and injector wear on higher-kilometre examples
  • Radiator and intercooler contamination on trucks used on dirt roads out west

None of these mean the Power Stroke is a bad engine — it's an excellent one when maintained. They mean short-trip, never-serviced ownership is what damages it, and that emissions-system data is worth reading at every service rather than waiting for a warning light.

Towing with an F-250 or F-350

Super Duty trucks are among the most capable tow vehicles on Australian roads, but the limiting number is rarely the engine. It's GCM, tow ball down weight, the rating of the towbar actually fitted, and whether the conversion documentation matches the plate on the truck. We go through the real numbers for your specific truck and van rather than quoting a brochure figure.

What should I check before a long tow?

  1. 1Brake pads, rotors and fluid condition — heat, not distance, is what wears them
  2. 2Trailer brake controller gain calibrated to the loaded van
  3. 3Tyre load rating and pressures set for the loaded weight, not the empty truck
  4. 4Coolant and transmission fluid condition — both take a beating on long climbs
  5. 5Suspension and airbag condition if the truck carries significant ball weight

Buying a used F-250 or F-350: conversion checks

Most Super Duty trucks in Australia have been converted to right-hand drive. Conversion quality is the single biggest variable in used-truck value, and it isn't visible from the driver's seat. Before you buy, get the steering, brake lines, wiring looms, dash fitment, airbag system and compliance documentation inspected by someone who works on these trucks weekly.

  • Compliance plate and conversion paperwork present and matching the vehicle
  • Steering geometry and column fitment — wander and uneven tyre wear are the giveaways
  • Brake line routing and pedal box quality
  • Wiring loom joins, especially behind the dash and around the firewall
  • Airbag/SRS system faults, which often show only on a scan tool
  • Service history that matches the kilometres, with correct oil specification used

A pre-purchase inspection on a converted Super Duty is the cheapest money you'll spend on the truck. We inspect the conversion, the driveline and the emissions system together and give you a written picture before you commit.

F-250 vs RAM 2500 vs Silverado 2500HD

All three are excellent heavy-duty tow vehicles and all three cost $599 for a minor service with us. The differences owners actually feel are in the transmission and the emissions system: the 6.7 Power Stroke pairs with Ford's 10-speed, the RAM 2500 runs the Cummins and Aisin combination, and the Silverado 2500HD runs the L5P Duramax with the Allison. Choose on how you tow and what condition the individual truck is in, not on badge.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an F-250 service in Australia?
A minor service on an F-250 or F-350 at American Truck Centre is a fixed $599, including premium Penrite oil to full capacity, an OEM filter, a full safety inspection, a scan-tool health check and a logbook stamp.
How often should a 6.7 Power Stroke be serviced?
Every 12,000 km or 12 months, and treat regular towing or short-trip use as severe duty. Emissions-system data should be read at every service, not just when a light appears.
What's the most common F-250 problem in Australia?
Emissions-related restriction — EGR and DPF — on trucks that only do short trips, followed by fuel system wear on higher-kilometre examples. Both are far cheaper to catch early than to repair after a failure.
Should I get a converted F-250 inspected before buying?
Yes. Right-hand-drive conversion quality varies enormously and most of it isn't visible without a proper inspection of steering, brake lines, wiring and compliance documentation.
