Signs you might need a GVM or GCM upgrade
- You're consistently over payload once fuel, passengers, canopy and gear are loaded
- Your combination (truck plus heavy touring van) exceeds GCM even though each is individually legal
- The rear sags noticeably even with airbags or heavier springs fitted
- You've had a weighbridge check and confirmed you're over on GVM or an axle rating
What is a GVM upgrade?
GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum legal weight of your truck when loaded — passengers, fuel, canopy, tools, tray and tow ball download all count. A GVM upgrade is an engineered suspension package with an approval that raises that limit. It does not, on its own, raise how much you can tow.
GVM vs GCM — which one do you need?
| Upgrade | What it raises | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| GVM upgrade | Loaded weight of the truck alone | You are over on payload, ball weight or rear axle |
| GCM upgrade | Truck and trailer combined | The van is legal but the combination is over GCM |
| Both | Payload and combination | Heavy touring van plus a fully loaded truck |
Pre-registration vs second-stage upgrades
A pre-registration (SSM) upgrade is fitted before the truck is first registered and carries a national approval. A post-registration upgrade is approved by a Queensland-recognised engineer once the truck is on the road. Most American trucks we see are already registered, so we work through the second-stage path and supply the paperwork you need for TMR and your insurer.
GVM upgrades by model
RAM 1500 & 2500/3500
RAM 1500 owners running a canopy or camper with the family and gear on board frequently find factory payload eaten up quickly; RAM 2500/3500 owners more often need a GCM upgrade to legally tow heavier fifth-wheelers or large caravans.
Silverado & GMC Sierra/Denali
Local RHD conversions can reduce factory payload compared with the US-spec figure, so a weighbridge check is particularly worthwhile before assuming your Silverado or Sierra has the payload margin the brochure suggests.
Ford F-Series
F-250/F-350 owners touring with heavy slide-on campers or big fifth-wheelers are the most common candidates for a combined GVM and GCM upgrade on this platform.
What we fit
- Engineered spring and shock packages matched to your loaded weight
- Heavy-duty rear leaf packs or coil upgrades depending on model
- Airbag load support where a full upgrade is not required
- Weighbridge assessment before and after the work
- Wheel alignment and load-corrected tyre pressures on completion
Process and timeframe
- 1Weighbridge assessment of your truck as currently loaded.
- 2Confirm whether a GVM upgrade, GCM upgrade, or simply better load distribution solves your problem.
- 3Fit the engineered kit and complete the required inspection.
- 4Supply compliance paperwork for TMR registration update and your insurer.
Turnaround depends on parts availability for the specific engineered kit and inspection scheduling, so we give you a realistic timeframe once we know your model and chosen kit.
Bring us your weighbridge tickets first. Around half of the owners who ask for a GVM upgrade actually need better load distribution and a corrected ball weight — which costs far less.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a GVM upgrade cost in Australia?
- It depends entirely on the truck and the kit. Because every setup differs, we quote after weighing your truck and confirming which engineered package suits your load — call us for a figure on your model.
- Does a GVM upgrade increase towing capacity?
- No. GVM covers the truck alone. To tow more you need a GCM upgrade, and the trailer's own braked rating still applies.
- Is a GVM upgrade legal in Queensland?
- Yes, when it uses an approved kit and is certified correctly. We supply the compliance documentation so you can update the registration and notify your insurer.
- Do I need to update my registration after a GVM upgrade?
- Yes. Once the certified upgrade is complete, you need to notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) with the compliance paperwork so your registered GVM matches the upgraded figure.
- Will my insurer need to know about a GVM upgrade?
- Yes, you should notify your insurer of any GVM or GCM upgrade. An undisclosed modification can complicate or void a claim, so we provide documentation to make that notification straightforward.
- How do I know if I actually need a GVM upgrade or just better load distribution?
- A weighbridge check tells you which axle or overall figure you're exceeding. Often correcting tow ball weight or load position solves the problem without the cost of a full GVM upgrade — we assess this honestly before recommending an upgrade.
- Can a GVM upgrade be fitted to an already-registered truck?
- Yes, through a second-stage (post-registration) engineering approval process carried out by a Queensland-recognised engineer, which is the path most American truck owners here need since their trucks are already on the road.
